Italy » Marche » Ascoli Piceno
At the end of a country road in the beautiful Sibillini National Park, one finds Il Gelso, a traditional farmhouse in a splendid panoramic position with breathtaking views of the Sibillini Mountains, offering guests the chance to fully experience life in one of the most beautiful parts of the region of Le Marche.rnrnSituated in the grounds of Il Gelso is a smaller house, recently restored maintaining the original materials of the hay loft. It can only be rented in conjunction with Il Gelso in order to extend the accommodation to 12 persons.
Il Gelso is furnished tastefully with antique furniture from the owner's family lending a personal touch and making guests feel welcome and at home.
Il Gelso is half way between the two interesting regional capitals, Macerata and Ascoli Piceno, each only 40km away by lovely routes. Macerata is a pleasant old university city. The Palazzo Ricci houses a very fine collection of Italian contemporary art (view by appointment) and the distinguished Summer Opera Season in the 19th century amphitheatre is second only to Verona's. Ascoli Piceno, important in Roman and Renaissance times, repays exploration with its fine palazzi and churches, an interesting Pinacoteca and medieval quarter, a superb Roman bridge, and one of the nicest Piazza in Italy, "Piazza del Popolo". Exuberance is still shown here in the evening passeggiata, in the Carnival, and in the spectacular jousting of the Quintana (July and September). Fermo is another handsome, interesting town deserving a visit, en route to the nearest resort at Porto San Giorgio (40km). A small sailing and fishing port, with a sandy beach, palms and pines, this is pleasantly Edwardian in style. Il Gelso is at the centre of a lively and inviting area. Amandola (3km) is attractive, with good shops and pizzerie. It is noted for its enterprising theatre workshop, especially mime, in August and a fascinating Museo della Civiltà Contadina (summer only). Sarnano (6km) is a picturesque little spa with some good churches and medieval music and feasting during summer. The whole region is full of unexpected gems: Roman ruins, fine abbeys and Romanesque churches; the Renaissance art treasures of San Severino Marche; enticing villages like San Ginesio, Montefortino, Monte San Martino and Montemonaco.
